We normally do not put a review together with competitors of like product but we will on this occation. This last fall our goal, pattern chokes from Carlson and Briley. We headed for the gun club with everything we needed accept a location to shoot. They have a range for patterning but they were not quite sure where, so much for our big plans.
In addition to attempting to pattern the chokes, our plans included using shotgun shells from (Kent) Gamebore and B&P. That did not happen but we did use the shells for waterfowl. Our review on the shotgun shells from the field, mixed at best. I personally shot both (Kent) Gamebore and B&P in 4, 5, and 6 shot and my impression was and is they were too light for ducks. I changed to heavier shot as the birds got spooky but early season these should be plenty for ducks. I have used this size from other manufacturers and did not have a problem. On one occation duck hunting with Gamebore’s Bio-Wad™ one of then disintegrated and a shower of wad contents filled the air, and I missed the duck. The claim from Gamebore the wad begins to break down after the shot. I don’t doubt it but this particular one broke down in my barrel. We were disappointed we could not shoot and pattern before we hit the field. We stopped shooting the shells and with any luck, we can pattern for next season.
We did test one choke last season Chris Stinson used the Briley Extreme Range in the Benelli SBE. He was convinced it improved his shooting. Chris is a better than average shot and on one goose hunt, he did not miss. Like the shotgun shells, we did not give the chokes the extensive testing we wanted. The experiences with the Briley Extensive Range choke both Chris and I am convinced, they work better than the shotgun shells. Unfortunately, we did not do the kind of testing that would offer a clear picture we will keep you updated.
All chokes fit on a Benelli Super Black Eagle II and 870 Remington
