Alpen Optics and its owner and I go back a long way. I have had a relationship with Alpen that goes back many years and currently use an Alpen Binocular as my primary hunting glass. I tell you this because I believe in full disclosure of friendships with certain people in the outdoor industry. This does not mean that I will not be straightforward and honest about our reviews. I don?t do all of them, and even if I did it would not matter. I like Alpen products and I always have, I've used them for years and will continue to have Alpen products for as long as I hunt.
We have tested the Alpen Apex at length and for the money is as good as it gets.

Tested...Clearwater Sleeping Bag, XL Air Pad, and Taurus 2 Outfitter Tent.
Alps Mountaineering is new to Montana Test. Alps is located in New Haven, Missouri. You might think Missouri would not be the ideal location to manufacturer tents, sleeping bags, and pads among other outdoor product. Dennis Brune the owner of Alps Mountaineering has been involved in design, selling, and marketing outdoor gear since 1978. Dennis has worked for Kelty, Slumberjack, Sierra Designs, and Wenzel. In 1994, Dennis started Alp Mountaineering and brought all his expertise with him. It is evident that knowledge is more important than location.

XL Air Pad.
You may be like me; you haven't found a sleeping pad that you can actually sleep on. I have been scouring every pad maker to find a lightweight comfortable sleeping pad. The XL Air Pad does work. This is not your backpacking pad, and thankfully, I won't have to trek it any further than the car to the drift boat. The XL pad weights in at 6 lbs. 8 oz.
This year, one of our goals is to pack light, reduce our weight by at least 50 to 75 pounds. The drift boat holds only so much gear. The lighter we can go the better, we are testing light sleeping bags, tents, stoves, grills, and pads if we can find them to cut down on weight. Last year we packed a 21 lb. grill; our new grill now weights a whopping 1.2 lb. (See the Grilliput Grill in the Photo Gallery.) We have taken a page from the minimalist handbook; pack light whenever with whatever you can.
Clearwater Sleeping Bag.
The Alps Clearwater Sleeping bag stays with our theme of lightweight gear. This is a 20-degree mummy bag 32 x 80 inches, and uses MicroX a relatively new insulation. The bag keeps you warm with very little loft. The Clearwater uses #8 YKK two-way zippers with an insulated draft tube, total weight is 3 lb.

Clearwter Sleeping Bag
Taurus 2 Outfitter Tent.
The Taurus is a two-person tent of normal size. What is normal size? My son Chris, who I shared and tested tents with last summer, is not normal at 6'3" and 250 lb. Some two-man tents are not big enough for him. When Chris tests it, we advise others, do not be the two in two-person, I learned this the hard way.
The Taurus Outfitter weights in at 8-7 pounds, has just over 37 square feet of floor space. Upgrades from last year are oversized #10 door zippers and a heavy-duty nylon floor. Poles are aircraft alloy aluminum, lightweight and strong. The Taurus Outfitter 2 has two vestibules for extra storage. Vestibules are necessary for extra stuff and a dry area to store shoes, pants, anything you want to keep dry while you sleep. The weather in Montana is unpredictable; you can close your eyes under starry skies and wake up in a downpour. Vestibules are an absolute necessity.

Taurus 2 Outfitter Tent
Here is a tip for you that I am sure you have heard or read. Put the tent up before you head out, don?t wait until you are camping. We put up tents, pull out sleeping bags and crawl inside, and try the pad before we leave for any trip. If you can, set up everything in the yard, sleep in the tent overnight using all your new camping gear. This will give you an opportunity to notice all the nuances. I can promise if you take the time to do this you will rest comfortably when you take it to the field. I did pull out the tent and set it up in the front yard. (Check Photo Gallery). Alps have instructions for tent set up sewn in the lip of the tent bag.

July?2006
Anglers Image manufactures a unique product. The Tippet Tweaker.

The Tippet Tweaker holds three spools of tippet and comes with a zinger and nippers.
You can wear it with or without your vest. During the dog days of summer, many of us don?t like to wear our vests or waders but want something to hold the bare minimum. We want to change flies and tippet in a hurry and the Tippet Tweaker may be the answer. Anglers Image also sent along strike indicators.
August...2006
We have tested on a limited basis and fine the Tippet Tweaker a fine product but it can get in your way when you cast.

The TROUTSTREAM wading sandal from BITE FOOTWEAR offers the angler a chance to ditch his waders and fish in shorts. Waders are not mandatory when temperatures hit the mid ninety's and you want a wading sandal or shoe that will protect your feet. The TROUTSTREAM is made of Durahide, lightweight leather that is very durable. A quick lacing system, neoprene lined with a large toe guard with drainage ports.
The bottom of the wading sandal is 10 mm felt, incorporates five Beehive sticky pads for extra wet surface traction. The TROUTSTREAM also has a wide sturdy base with an EVA midsole for uneven rocks because they are everywhere here in Montana waters. The TROUTSTREAM offers the necessary traits that make a great wading sandal.
We have tested the PRIMAL FELT wading shoe. The PRIMAL FELT has a long list of characteristics needed for a wading shoe. The uppers offer a wide toe box, quick drying Durahide, lateral and medial vents for draining. Athlete shoe construction for lightweight, flexibility, and rubberized toe guard with drainage ports.

Primal Felt on Big Horn with average size Rainbow.
The bottom has a 10 mm felt bottom, high sidewall mudguard for stability, and a wide sturdy base for support. The PRIMAL FELT has built-in arch supports for added comfort with a hidden shank for increased stability.
August...2006
Both TROUTSTREAM amd PRIMAL FELT wading shoes have proven to be as advertised. We have tested in cold and warm weather and both perform outstandingly.

We are currently testing a couple of items from Cabela?s.
The original Signature Series Fishing shirt in Aqua. This is a fly-fishing shirt that Cabela?s redesigned for 2006. They improved the original design with a new caped back and a breathable mesh panel to circulate air.
I have worn this shirt in cold weather but have not tested in hot weather. We will keep you updated as testing continues.
We are also testing the Cabela?s Guidewear Toggle, and 3-eye boat shoes. Both Chris and I have worn these boat shoes and can tell you here they are very comfortable. We have not had them long enough to give them a serious test but so far, we enjoy the way they fit.
I do have a concern about the laces; I broke a lace on the 3-eye boat shoe and will have a real chore putting in new laces. The laces rap around the ankle of the shoe and the only way to install new laces is to figure some way to snake them through with a stiff but flexible wire. I will let you know when I try it.
Recommend.........Still Testing.

Fishing Vest
Levelwear Shirt
Char Bloom is a name you may not be familiar with but you need to be. Chars fly-fishing apparel for women is very distinctive.
Char is a true pioneer in the development of fly-fishing outerwear for women vests, pants, shirts, hats, and accessories.
I tested the fly-fishing vest and the Levelwear shirt both in rose/pink. I am not a big fan of the bright colors but when I received both vest and shirt I was pleasantly surprised how well both fit and how much I loved the color.
I tested the shirt, vest for the first time on the Big Horn River, and caught the biggest Brown of my career. Chars vest definitely changed my luck as you can see by the photos.

Montana Test is fortunate; we analyze and review all kinds of great outdoor gear. On rare occasions, we receive a product that all testers want.
The Cloudviel Crystal Creek jacket falls into that rare category. Every one of our testers wants the Crystal Creek, unfortunely for them and fortunately, for me, the Crystal Creek is mine and mine alone to test and review.
The Crystal Creek is beautiful. It stands out and probably wins first prize in a pageant of beautiful and functional jackets. When you add up the features, function, and looks, you have a sure fire classic.

The new Henry's Fork Vest III is a fine-fishing vest and this was my first chance to give it a test. I have worn my former vest for six to eight years and changing fishing vests takes adjustment. Leo Lapito one of my testers, and I are finding that changing a fundamental piece of fishing gear is a process and requires a long testing period. We will need time to reach a certain comfort level. Our retired fishing vests were a well-driven road, we knew every curve, bump, and straight away, when you travel a new highway or change vests you stay alert to the nuances. This is no refection on the quality of the vests that we test, just a commentary on what we believe you will find when you decide to make a change to your gear.
The Henry's Fork III vest offers plenty of pockets for fly boxes, tippet, leader, with two pigtail clip retractors. I load my vest with plenty tackle and there is room for all of it. It fits great has a large storage pocket in the back for Gore-Tex jacket. As I mentioned above I am growing more comfortable with the Henry's Fork III the longer I wear it.

Pat wearing Columbia Henry Fork III vest.

Bonehead Long Sleeve Fishing Shirt. PFG. This is a great fitting shirt with a number of features. Button tab sleeve holders, we like this feature a lot. During hot days on the water, you want to keep your sleeves rolled up and want them to stay there. The tab lock works perfect. Other features include fly box pockets, tool holder, and rod holder, fully vented to stay cool on warm days.
Booth Bay Jacket PFG. This is one of the finest Waterproof/breathable jackets we have tested. It features critically seam seals, windproof, has front cargo hand warming pockets with a maximum visibility hood. Chris wore the jacket fishing on the Big Horn and has a real attachment to the jacket already.
Aruba Pant PFG. This is a Fishing pant that Columbia offers with zip off pant legs. It has mesh-lined pockets to drain water away if you head into deeper water. During the hottest part of the day, we will pull off the waders; fish in only shorts and wading shoes. You need a short that drains water from pockets and dries quickly. The Aruba Pant appears to have the right make up to perform.
Bahama II Long Sleeve Shirt. PFG. The Bahama II is a UPF 30 fishing shirt. The UPF means protection from the sun. You can get 15, 30, 40, or 50 protection, UPF 30 is considered perfect for us here in Montana. The protection comes from the weave of the material, that?s as technical as I will explain. The higher protection numbers are for climates closer to the equator. All fishing shirts need to be roomy enough to move unrestricted and cannot interfere with casting. The Bahama II is fully vented, includes tab sleeve holders, rod holder, tool holder, and hook and loop closed fly box pockets.

Chris wearing Columbia Bahama II fishing shirt.
Columbia Fishing Caps. Columbia makes some really fine caps. We wear head covers to minimize glare. We wear the LOGO II Ball Cap, and the Mesh Ball Cap.
The Mesh cap has mesh backpanels to circulate air. The Logo II is a full-brushed twill panel cap to wear on cooler days on the water, or for everyday wear. Chris has not found a cap that fits his big fat head, the Columbia caps fit all but him. We are constantly on the hunt for a cap that fits.

Pat with Rainbow and Columbia Cap.
COLUMBIA WOMEN'S FLY FISHING SPORTSWEAR.
April...2006
If you have shopped for Fly Fishing sportswear for women you have found out what I did, there isn't much of a selection. You can wear anything you want when you are on the water but when temperatures hit the high nineties, you lose your waders and slip on wading sandals and shorts. You want clothing that is comfortable and dries quickly. Columbia has the largest selection of fishing wear for women that I have found that meet these criteria.
Aruba II Pant in Sage and Fossil.
The pant is 100% nylon Tactel, Omni-Dry Breeze Weave ripstop. Omni-Dry developed by Columbia is a moisture management process designed to keep you comfortable and dry by drawing moisture to the fabric surface called wicking. The wicking process moves moisture quickly to the surface of the clothing to evaporate. The 100% nylon Tactel is a crinkle-finish ripstop, durable, lightweight, and quick drying. The pant also incorporates UPF 30, good UV protection from the sun.
Eddyline Long Sleeve Shirt.
The Eddyline is designed with all the same features as the Aruba II pant.
Whidbey Short.
This is a quick-drying short for fishing or casual wear. A 100% textured nylon Perfecta Plus. Perfecta plus is a heavier version of the Perfecta cloth. The Whidbey is versatile worn in and out of the water.
The Ebb Tide tank top and the Bonehead II Polo.
Both worn for fishing or casual wear. I will be testing when the weather dictates.

Blue Lizard Suncream
April...2006
According to the American Academy of Dermatology one out of five American?s will develop some form of skin cancer. Fly Fishers spend hours in the sun and we need to protect our skin. Blue Lizard Suncream has the ingredients you need to protect yourself from possible skin cancer.
Sunscreen that works needs to have at least 5% Zinc Oxide; this protects you from harmful skin cancer rays. SPF 30+ is the highest you need to use. If it is 30+, this is what the number means. 30+ X 20 minutes, this is the length of time you can spend in the sun. If you do the math, it totals 10 hours, which is a long day under the sun. Higher levels such as 40, 50, and 60 don?t make much sense if you do the math.
Here are some tips for all of us to follow. Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before you go outside even in cloudy and hazy weather. Use a shot glass full of sunscreen each application reapply every two hours. If you are in and out of the water apply again when you dry off. Wear sunglasses, a broad-brimmed hat. If you wear cap like we do, pay attention to the ears and neck area.
Blue Lizard contains 6% Zink Oxide, Octinoxate 7.5%, Octocrylene 2%, and Oxybenzone 3%, among other ingredients. If you have children, less than 6 months old check with the child?s Doctor before applying. Blue Lizard Suncream will help prevent skin cancer if used correctly. No one can offer a guarantee.

Fisherman Eyewear
Our compadres at Montana Sporting Journal turned us on to a pair of Fisherman Eyewear, the Polarized Rogue Bifocal +2.00 power from the Guideline Series. We have not tested any Bifocal sunglass yet, I should say I haven?t tested. When you get to be my age Bifocals are necessary. I wear two pair of glasses when I fish, sunglasses and my + 2.00 power I buy at Wally World. A good pair of Bifocals should keep me from switching each time I tie a knot or change flies. I will give the glasses a cogent test and review.

We do not care about labels we want product to improve all that we do.You have heard all the cliché’s about first impressions; we won’t bore you with it. However, we can tell you the Gordini gloves, socks, and underwear at first glance is striking. We search high and low pursuing product we can test, not at first considered by the fly angler or the hunter. Some believe because it isn’t specifically for fishing or hunting that it is not qualified. We do not care about labels we want product to improve what you do and what we do, fish, and hunt. Gordini is a crossover product not intended for what we do but does a great job of doing it anyway.

September 2005......March.... Continuous Testing
Heat Factory is one of the small numbers of companies that manufacture Heat warmers. I don?t mean they are a small company; there are not many companies that do what they do.
We use hand warmers, foot warmers, toe warmers and every other type of artificial heat source we can find when cold winds blow and we don?t care what direction. We carry every kind of warmer made; we have then in every vehicle and hunting bag. I keep a good supply in the Duck blind and in the blind; hand and foot warmers are imperative. We heat our blinds with two and three burner cook stoves to stay warm and cook our gourmet meals. However, you can warm your hands but the feet are another story.
I keep a hand warmer in the double entry front pocket of my waders so when I call or need to grab the shotgun I?m doing it with warm hands. The biggest problem I have, and so do the other testers is sitting and occasionally standing around in a Duck blind for long hours. Your feet will get cold and the last thing you want to do is get out an | | | | | |
